Greening IT

Green IT Departments Saves Money

Big savings in energy costs and opening new markets are among the top drivers for companies making their IT departments more energy efficient, according to new research from PriceWaterhouseCoopers.

The PricewaterhouseCoopers report is based on both a global on-line survey of technology industry executives conducted by the Economist Intelligence Unit and in-depth personal interviews with industry leaders and PwC subject matter professionals. There are two main drivers of sustainability movement in the technology industry, both economic rather than altruistic: the potential to increase revenue through the increasing demand for greener products and services and the desire to decrease expenditures by reducing energy consumption.

Better Ways of Working

Review of Policing highlights the need for Technology

The report by Sir Ronnie Flanagan, the Chief Inspector of Constabulary, identifies a new technology driven model of policing in which the police direct resources specifically to areas that will have the biggest impact on reducing harm to communities.

The review included the following key points:

Reducing bureaucracy
Reduce the amount of information routinely recorded for many crimes while retaining extensive recording for serious crimes - trialling a new streamlined crime recording process across four forces - Staffordshire, Leicestershire, West Midlands and Surrey.

Better collaborative working of the agencies currently responsible for inspecting and auditing the police, including HMIC, to prevent duplication and share best practice.

Overhaul of the stop and account process - removing the form and replacing with a 'receipt' of the encounter and a verbal record on Airwave that an encounter has taken place (with the person's ethnicity). This will be trialled this year.

That the receipt based system for stop and search remain, but be streamlined as new technology emerges.

The adoption of standardised forms based on the minimum appropriate reporting requirements as recommended in his interim report needs to be followed by the implementation of mobile data technology over time, such as handheld computers.

Worldwide Connectivity Scorecard

The Connectivity Scorecard is a pioneering global information and communications technology (ICT) index that measures the extent to which governments, businesses and consumers make use of connectivity technologies to enhance social and economic prosperity.

For each component of the Scorecard, countries are benchmarked against the best in class in their tier; thus if a country was best in all dimensions it would score a maximum of 10.0. Countries typically considered to be highly connected achieved only modest scores on the Scorecard – the average score for a group of 16 countries that include the U.S., Sweden and Korea was 5.05.

The Connectivity Scorecard ranks the United States first in a group of 16 innovation driven economies (as defined by the World Economic Forum), although its score is only 6.97 out of a possible 10.0.

Text Messaging tackles obesity in NHS Primary Care Trust

An innovative scheme to use mobile technology to obtain a patient’s weight has proved a great success in Hammersmith & Fulham NHS Primary Care Trust (PCT).

Funded centrally by Hammersmith and Fulham PCT, the service provided by iPLATO specifically targets important public health concerns such as smoking, flu and childhood immunisation and obesity. A crucial aspect of delivering these goals is iPLATO’s ability to integrate to multiple GP systems and therefore to enable surgeries to base their mobile patient services on live data residing in their patients’ electronic records.

Mandy Norton, Practice Manager at The Bush Doctors said, ‘’Text messaging has been a massive help, enabling us to gather a patient’s weight quickly in order to calculate their BMI. Of course we weigh people at the surgery, but this method allows us to quickly and very cost effectively update the records of people who may not need our services very often. With mobile being the communication method of choice for our very varied patient base and with obesity levels being where they are, we feel that this is a perfect complement to our current service ’’. General News

Wholesale Broadband Decision from EU

EU regulators have accepted proposals from Ofcom, the UK industry watchdog, to scrap provisions that mean BT is required to offer a nationwide broadband service to competitors at a fixed price.

The Commission confirmed that Ofcom's proposals for regulating this sector are consistent with the rules set out in the EU framework and that the decision to tailor regulation to local competitive conditions through the identification of sub-national markets is justified.

Microsoft Service Pack One Incompatibility Issues

Microsoft has posted a list of applications which will be incompatible with the forthcoming Windows Vista Service Pack 1.

The list of programs affected by SP1 is divided into three. Some will be blocked by the update, some will not run and others will lose some of their functions.

Three other applications are said to experience additional performance issues, such as crashes or loss of functionality. The New York Times Reader application crashes when a user attempts to right click, while the Rising Personal Firewall utility is unable to disconnect. Updates for both applications are available.

Broadband the Next Generation Review

The Business and Competitiveness Minister, Shriti Vadera has launched an independent review into next generation broadband networks.

The review will consider possible barriers to role out and will look at barriers to collaboration between content and infrastructure providers.

Government Minister, Shriti Vadera said: “The way we will do business, access many government services, as well as information and entertainment, will change beyond recognition over our lifetime. New technologies will push the boundaries of today’s communications infrastructure.”

The key areas the review will consider will be:

  • To consider the possible barriers to any new models of investment, involving collaboration between telecommunications suppliers and between suppliers and content providers and identify potential solutions
  • To examine whether there are opportunities to minimise the cost of private sector investment, including whether there is a public sector role in this respect, for example related to civil works
  • To examine the framework within which investment will take place to promote a more certain investment environment
  • To clarify the treatment of new infrastructure options within the non-domestic rating system
  • To examine whether the EU and UK statutory framework has given Ofcom the necessary powers to establish a regulatory regime which would provide regulatory certainty for investors and sufficiently incentivise new investment in high speed access Top
