Online Tools

SustainIT has developed various online tools that allow you to assess the sustainability of your current, and proposed, ICT deployment.

Online Sustainability Toolkit – A new online 'toolkit' that assesses the economic, social and environmental impacts of project funding application, plans, and strategies has been launched in the East of England.

Developed by UK CEED, the sustainability toolkit has been created for the four key regional organisations - the East of England Regional Assembly (EERA), the East of England Development Agency (EEDA), the Government Office for the East of England (GO-East), and the Sustainable Development Round Table (SDRT) for the East of England.

The original application of the online toolkit was developed to allow for the sustainability assessment of strategic policies and initiatives in the East of England under a joint commission from the East of England Regional Assembly, the East of England Sustainable Development Round Table, the East of England Development Agency and GO-East (http://www.toolkit-east.org.uk).

The toolkit is based on the Sustainable Development Framework for the East of England (SDF), whose nine high level objectives and detailed ‘key challenges’ are used as the defining criteria (and site navigation) by which to measure a policy or project’s sustainability profile.

The East of England toolkit is designed to:

  • Appraise and guide regional/local strategy/project development using regional sustainable development frameworks as a benchmark
  • Highlight relevant local/regional/national sustainable development issues/policies
  • Raise awareness of sustainable development within the regional context
  • Stimulate improved policies/projects and partnership working.

The toolkit has subsequently been adapted by UK CEED working with the East Midlands Regional Assembly and its partners for use with the region’s Integrated Regional Strategy (www.emtoolkit.org.uk). A more refined version of the toolkit was developed for the North West region (www.sdtoolkit-northwest.org.uk).

The toolkit’s development process has been underpinned by extensive consultation with users from diverse public, private and voluntary sector organisations within the two regions. The current version of the toolkit is being used by over 2000 individually registered users in the three regions. It has been used to appraise regional waste strategies, regional and sub-regional housing strategies, major leisure developments, local development frameworks, community strategies, health impact assessments, local area agreements etc.
