Welcome to SustainIT
Information and communication technologies (ICT) have the potential to deliver significant social and environmental benefits to individuals, communities and organisations. SustainIT, an initiative of leading charity UK CEED, focuses on the relationship between ICT and sustainable development and seeks to demonstrate how the technologies can be used to realise these benefits. The ICT industry accounts for 2% of the world’s global carbon dioxide emissions. Experts forecast that improving the efficiency of ICT in industry could lead to a 7.8 gigatonne reduction in carbon dioxide levels (reduction of 15% on global emissions).

SustainIT undertakes the following activities with public, private and voluntary sector partners in the UK and across Europe:
  • Quantitative and qualitative research
  • Demonstration projects
  • Policy advice and guidance
  • Award programmes and good practice dissemination
  • Development of on line tools and guidance materials
  • Debate and engagement activities

SustainIT is a unit of the national, not-for-profit, sustainable development charity UK CEED (UK Centre for Economic and Environmental Development). It was founded in 1999 to research and promote uses of ICT that deliver tangible social, economic and environmental benefits. Since then, it has worked on research and dissemination projects on sustainable ICT in partnership with a wide range of organisations, including the European Commission, UK Government departments (Communities and Local Government, Defra and DFID), a number of regional agencies, local authorities, IDEA, AOL, BT, Brother and Vodafone. It also organises the annual national awards programme, The SustainIT Awards.
